Demand for documentaries was driven by buyers of streaming and digital platforms from the United States (40%), followed by India (20%), Singapore (12%), UK (4%) and Australia (4%).
Notable deals include an American documentary streamer that picked up over 215 hours of factual content from companies in the UK, Germany, Netherlands and Canada; and a luxury in-car experience software provider that licensed 90 hours of factual content from India, Netherlands and the UK.
According to Parrot Analytics, global consumer demand for factual content (documentary, reality, news, and non-live sports series) has increased by 28.8% since January 2020. While most growth coincided with the height of the pandemic (January 2020-March 2021), consumer demand has not abated since and has remained elevated at 30% above the level in January 2020.
Competition Reality was the most in-demand type of factual content globally in 2021, accounting for 12.4% of demand. Interestingly, consumer demand was spread evenly across other subgenres like True Crime, Cooking, Science, Romance, Nature and Lifestyle.
